Also, PageRank is one of 200+ factors or &#8220;signals&#8221; as Google calls them, used to sort search results. It would be like focusing on the spark plugs of a race car to determine the winner of a race. They&#8217;re important, but not the only consideration.</p>
<p>Indexation: Generally speaking, the more pages a site has indexed, the better its chances are of ranking high. Certain infrastructure and content issues can hamper or even prevent the indexing of pages, and thus, have a negative impact on rankings.</p>
<p>HTML/XHTML &amp; CSS: Weight of keywords, relevancy of a page and a site as a whole and its &#8216;crawler-bility&#8217; (the ease at which a search engine can read a sites content) can be maximised by effective use of CSS, HTML and XHTML.</p>
<p>Meta tags: Whilst meta tags are no longer used by the major search engines for ranking, they must still be unique to every page and have certain limits placed on character length. For the purpose of ranking, meta tags can actually be omitted altogether. However the description may be used as the snippet in the search engine results pages, so there is an opportunity to increase click through rate.</p>
<p>Keyword choices: The choice of keywords is essential to determining the relevancy of a page. Targeted keywords should be placed in the title tags and sprinkled evenly throughout the body copy, without making the text contrived or the keyword density too high.</p>
<p>Internal link structure: The internal linking structure is paramount to how a site is ranked. Search engines like to see a clear and logical hierarchical structure. This improves crawlability and can help maximise internal PageRank, which solidifies a web sites ranking position. Search engines also give more weight to links found within body content as these are usually human edited.</p>
<p>Spam: Any activity that falls outside the search engine guidelines is considered spam. The potential penalties range from negative impact on rankings to permanent delisting.</p>

<p><strong>Final Words from our SEO Consultant:</strong></p>
<p>Yes, SEO is not rocket science, but a wrong SEO decision could be costly. That&#8217;s illustrated in a Wall Street Journal article recently on  search engine Topix and SEO issues in general. A look at that, revisiting Google&#8217;s webmaster support efforts plus new confirmation that SEO continues to be more mainstream. Having said that, it&#8217;s worse to be dependent on search engine traffic for mainstream business enterprises.</p>
<p>For example, shopping search engines (among others) might see their search results pages get dropped from Google. Becasue at some point, we guarantee that Google and probably Yahoo as well will shift over to showing their own shopping and news search listings by default when they detect a news search query is happening.</p>
<p>You&#8217;ll do a regular search, they&#8217;ll understand it is news oriented, and they&#8217;ll give you search results by default with a suggestion that you might also want to search the entire web. Heck, Google just started testing this type of &#8220;search the web&#8221; concept within news search results.</p>

<p>A recent report by e-Consultancy and Neutralize has revealed that companies in UK are reaping the benefits of paid search engine optimization. Many U.K. firms that took part in their study saw returns in excess of 300% and more.</p>
<p>As per another study by Credit Suisse, the global market for online ads will increase 32% to $16.6 billion in 2006. They suggest that Yahoo, the most visited website, and number one search engine Google will win new advertising business at the expense of traditional meida publishers and TV. That estimate includes paid advertising but research shows people are not clicking on ads and that advertisers have given up on clickthroughs, and instead are looking for branding benefits. <p>- 87% of search engine marketers said to have paid to advertise on Google, compared to 45% for Yahoo, 33% for MSN, 11% for MIVA and 6% for Ask.com.</p>
<p>- More than half of respondents said that their companies spend in excess of $20,000 on paid search annually. A quarter of respondents reported spending more than $200,000 annually.</p>
<p>- 62% plan to greatly increase investment in SEO for natural listings.</p>
<p>- They spent, on average, 32% of their marketing budget on online marketing.</p>
<p>While Google is, in many respects, viewed as the best search engine, over half of respondents thought that Google has an unhealthy dominance of the search market.</p>
<p>Some see Google&#8217;s dominance in the market as a two-edged sword &#8211; on the one hand, the fact that Google generates such a high proportion of the search volume means that many advertisers feel they can focus their efforts on this search engine with good returns. On the other hand, an over reliance on Google is seen as a potential risk to businesses. Many advertisers would like to see more competition from the other search engines.</p>
<p>In India, the major problem with most search engine optimization campaigns is under funding. Even after getting outstanding results, companies still hold back on SEO spending. The bar is being raised on competition as big money invades the search engine arena the &#8220;no spend&#8221; policy of some companies will result in continual disappointment with their SEO providers and the value of SEO.
